Volunteer

Can I complete my community service hours at HSCC?
Yes, first you will need to attend a general orientation  and complete a volunteer application and waiver.
Afterwards you must schedule your service hours with Emily, email:  hsccvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
(Once you complete your hours, you may attend additional training to become an HSCC Volunteer.)
I want to volunteer, what do I need to do?
Check our online calendar for the next Volunteer Orientation date & time. Email: hsccvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com to sign-up (space is limited). You will need to attend either Dog Walking or Cat Cuddling training after orientation, then you’ll be all set to come out and volunteer!
How old do you have to be to volunteer?
You have to be 16+ years to volunteer as an individual. We also offer a VIP Program (Volunteer in Pairs) for youth ages 10-15 to volunteer with a parent or guardian over 21 years old.
Can my mom bring me and wait in the car if we sign up as a VIP team?
Parents & youth must attend the orientation and training(s) together, and they must always stay together when volunteering. We think of it as a great opportunity to spend quality together!
I want to volunteer, but spending time with the dogs & cats is not an option for me?
We have several options for volunteering without direct interaction with the dogs and cats. The Volunteer Manager will go over everything at Volunteer Orientation. Volunteers can help with fundraising and event committees, off-site events/community outreach, Wish List drives, facility maintenance and landscaping, and don’t forget about all the laundry! Maybe you have a special talent or hobby that could make a world of difference at HSCC?
We have a group at work that wants to volunteer, can we do that?
Groups of 10 or more may schedule a group orientation and training session by contacting the Volunteer Manager, 828-464-8878.
Do you have a Pet Assisted Therapy program?
Yes, we have several dedicated volunteers who take shelter dogs out for interaction with residents of assisted living, retirement, and adult life facilities. Dog Walking training is required for Pet Assisted Therapy visits. We are always looking for more PAT volunteers!
Where are the orientations and trainings held?
All orientations and trainings are held in the education room at HSCC-Hickory.
Can anyone volunteer at both shelters after orientation and training?
After all training is complete, volunteers 18 and older may help at either shelter location, Hickory or Newton. VIP volunteer teams (ages 10-15) or those 16 or 17 yrs. are only able to volunteer at the Hickory shelter.
