Adoption

How do I find out what type animals are available for adoption?
Information and multiple photos of all of the animals currently available for adoption can be found on our website.
HSCC welcomes everyone to visit our shelter any time during our operating hours. We are open 6 days a week.
Are your shelter animals spayed or neutered?
Yes. We are committed to ending the pet overpopulation problem. Spaying and neutering is the #1 solution to this tragic problem. 100% of our animals are surgically altered prior to adoption.
Where do you get the animals in your shelter?
The vast majority of our animals are rescued from Catawba County Animal Control. HSCC also has an owner surrender program that assists pet owners who can no longer keep their pets for various reasons.
Do your animals have “issues”? Is that why they are in a shelter
People often assume shelter animals have behavior problems.
Many rescue animals are pets that either outlived their novelty with impulsive owners who considered them a possession rather than a family member. The problem is almost always a bad match, not a bad animal.
Lots of our animals came to us because the owner had unrealistic expectations about time, effort, and expense.
Some come to us because owners had to move to a place that didn’t allow pets.
How long do animals stay at your shelter?
HSCC is a NO KILL shelter. The animals we rescue stay with us until we find them their “forever home”.
Can anyone adopt from HSCC?
All adoptions are based on approved adoption applications. It does not matter where you live. You do not have to be a Catawba County resident to use our programs and services. HSCC’s adoption policy states that an adopter must be 18 years of age.
How do I adopt?
Why do you ask so many questions on your application?
We appreciate that you want to give one of our animals a second chance. They deserve it! Their past could vary from abuse or neglect to they just weren’t the right “fit” in their previous home. We ask questions because we care, about the pet and about you. We’re trying to make matches that will last forever.
What is the cost to adopt?
HSCC uses variable adoption pricing. Adoption fees offset the cost of evaluation, rescue, medical care, sterilization and housing.
What type payments do you accept?
Cash, checks, credit and debit cards. (HSCC does not accept American Express credit cards at this time.)
What’s included in the adoption fee?
Every animal we adopt has been spayed or neutered, is current on vaccinations and is microchipped. You will receive its medical history, a free medical examination certificate, 30 days of health insurance and a friend for life!
May I adopt a pet as a gift for someone else?
NO. Adopting a pet is a personal lifestyle decision. Each adopter is carefully screened to make sure they will be responsible pet owners and that the pet and adopter are a good match. If you want to give a pet as a gift, we suggest telling them with a card and bringing them to our shelter for the adoption process.
Will you hold an animal until I make my decision to adopt?
You may submit an adoption application for a specific shelter animal. You will be notified if it is approved. Your application will be the #1 application on that specific animal. If another application is submitted and approved on the same animal you will be called to see if you have made an adoption decision.
Do you ever get purebred dogs and cats?
YES, often.
I’m looking for a specific breed. Will you contact me when you have it?
No, please check our website often to see new animals that have been rescued.
