We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and motivated veterinarian to join our shelter team.

This position is ideal for a veterinarian who enjoys hands-on medicine, high-volume spay/neuter, surgery, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of shelter and community animals.

Our veterinarian will provide quality medical care while working closely with shelter staff, surgery staff, animal care staff, and volunteers to keep animals healthy and moving toward adoption.

Position Responsibilities

The Shelter Veterinarian will provide comprehensive veterinary care for dogs and cats, including:

• High-volume spay and neuter surgeries
• Some other surgeries as they arise
• Pre-operative examinations
• Anesthesia management and protocols
• Post-operative care and pain management protocols
• Wellness examinations and preventative medicine
• Vaccinations and parasite prevention
• Diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury for shelter pets
• Dental procedures and oral health care for shelter pets
• Medical care for injured, sick, and special needs for shelter pets
• Population medicine and disease prevention and protocols
• Community cat and TNR programs and protocols
• Humane euthanasia when medically necessary or appropriate for shelter pets
• Developing and maintaining shelter medical protocols
• Providing guidance and mentorship to veterinary support staff
• Working collaboratively with shelter and animal care teams

Spay & Neuter Focus

A significant part of this position will involve spay and neuter surgery. The ideal candidate should be comfortable performing routine sterilization procedures efficiently and safely while maintaining excellent standards of anesthesia, surgical technique, pain management, and patient care.

Experience with high-volume surgery is strongly preferred, but we are willing to consider veterinarians who are eager to develop their shelter surgery skills.

• Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in North Carolina
• Compassionate and committed to animal welfare
• Comfortable performing spay and neuter procedures
• Confident with anesthesia and surgical patient management
• Comfortable working with dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, ages, and temperaments
• Able to work efficiently in a fast-paced shelter environment
• A strong communicator and team player
• Able to make sound medical decisions while balancing patient welfare with shelter resources
• Interested in shelter medicine, population health, and community animal welfare

Shelter medicine experience is preferred but not required. We welcome veterinarians who have strong surgical skills and are interested in expanding their experience in shelter medicine.
