Employ-A-Cat

If you have issues with mice breaking into your food or grain storage, or causing chaos in the garden, consider a low-cost, non-toxic option — hire a cat! The Humane Society of Catawba County's "Employ-A-Cat" program helps under-socialized felines, also known as feral or community cats, find homes where they can earn their keep. These cats may be timid around humans, but they make terrific companions for a horse or goat. When you employ a cat from us, you are saving the life of a feline who cannot be adopted into a traditional home. It is important to understand that your new employee may or may not allow human contact.

Care

Your feline employee will need a clean, dry shelter — a barn, stable, garage, warehouse, or any location where they can escape predators. As with any pet you adopt, it is your responsibility to provide clean water, food every day, and long-term veterinary care.

Included With Adoption

  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • One-year rabies vaccine
  • Ear tip (a surgical notch on the ear that shows a community cat has been altered)

If you are interested in offering employment to a feline, fill out our working cat questionnaire below. Please allow 3-5 business days for our staff to review your submission. We will select a cat for you based on current shelter residents, and gender preference will be considered based on availability. You will not be able to visit or spend time with your cat prior to adoption.

They are not household companions and may never allow human contact. Every cat is already spayed or neutered, vaccinated for rabies, and ear-tipped.

WORKING CAT ADOPTION AGREEMENT

By submitting this application, I certify that the information provided is true and complete. I understand that submitting an application does not guarantee approval, and that the Humane Society of Catawba County reserves the right to approve or deny any application at its discretion.

I understand that Employ-A-Cat felines are under-socialized (feral or community) cats who may never allow human contact, and that they are placed as working cats — not as household companions. Each cat is already spayed or neutered, has a one-year rabies vaccine, and is ear-tipped.

I understand that staff will select and match a cat based on current shelter residents and availability, and that I will not be able to visit or choose the cat before adoption.

If approved, I agree to provide the cat(s) with a clean, dry shelter; fresh food and clean water every day; and long-term veterinary care for the life of the cat. I agree to confine the cat(s) in a secure, enclosed space for an acclimation period of 2 to 4 weeks so they learn to call their new home their territory.

I understand that if I can no longer care for the cat(s) at any time, I will contact the Humane Society of Catawba County.
