Leash & Safe Handling Requirements for Dogs
Dog Leash & Safe Handling Policy
To ensure the safety of all animals, clients, and staff, all dogs entering the facility must be properly secured and under control.
Leash Requirement
- All dogs must arrive at the facility on a secure, properly fitted leash.
- Dogs must remain on a leash from the time they enter the property until they are safely secured in an area designated by staff.
- Leashes must be securely attached to the dog's collar or harness.
- Retractable leashes should be locked at a short length while inside the facility and in areas where close control is necessary.
- Dogs should not be allowed to roam freely, even if they are friendly or well-trained.
Appropriate Equipment
Owners are responsible for providing a secure collar or harness and leash appropriate for their dog's size and strength. A damaged, excessively long, or otherwise unsuitable leash or collar / harness may not be considered adequate for safe handling.
Aggressive, Fearful, or Difficult-to-Handle Dogs
If a dog is fearful, aggressive, reactive, or difficult to control, the owner must notify staff upon arrival. Staff may require additional safety measures, including the use of a secure harness, slip lead, or other appropriate handling equipment.
Owners must follow staff instructions regarding the safe handling and movement of their dog while on the premises. If a dog is deemed difficult to handle, it may be declined and referred to a full-service vet for services.
Unsecured Dogs
Dogs presented without an appropriate leash or secure means of containment may be declined or required to obtain appropriate equipment before services can be provided. This policy is intended to reduce the risk of escape, injury, dog-to-dog incidents, and injury to clients or staff.
Owner Responsibility
The owner or person presenting the dog is responsible for maintaining control of the animal and ensuring that the dog remains safely secured while on the property.
