Owner Surrender, Strays & Emergency Situations
Pet Surrender & Intake Policy
The Humane Society of Catawba County accepts owned pets from Catawba County residents and surrounding areas as space allows. Please review the following policies before requesting a surrender or reporting a stray.
Owner Surrender
- Relinquishment Fee
A relinquishment fee of $50.00 is collected at intake and goes directly toward the animal's care until adoption. - Appointment Only
Owner surrenders are by appointment only. A staff member will contact you within 72 hours of your request with further instructions. - Behavioral Assessment (Dogs)
All dogs undergo a behavioral assessment at the shelter before we commit to accepting them. - Friendly Cats Only
Cats and kittens must be friendly to be surrendered. We do not accept feral cats through owner surrender.
Safety Emergencies
- Immediate Danger
If you need to surrender your pet immediately due to a safety emergency, please contact your local Animal Control rather than the shelter.
Space Limitations
- Not Every Request Can Be Accommodated
Because of space limitations, we are not able to accommodate every surrender request we receive. We maintain a list of local rescues and shelters who may be able to help, and we ask for your patience as our staff works through every request with care.
Found a Stray?
- Strays Are Not Accepted
The Humane Society of Catawba County does not accept stray animals. All stray animals should be taken to the county animal shelter.
